Hawai‘i Agricultural Foundation’s Localicious Art & Poetry Contest inspires students to share about their favorite dish and learn about how food goes from farm to fork
Honolulu, HI – The Hawaiʻi Agricultural Foundation’s (HAF) 2020 Localicious Hawaiʻi Art and Poetry Contest presented by Hawaiʻi Gas is now open for submissions. From today until November 29, 2019, students in grades K-8 are invited to submit their entry of an original artwork or poem about their “Favorite Dish Made with a Locally Grown, Caught or Raised Product.” The contest inspires children to learn about the local ingredients in their favorite foods and understand how food goes from farm to fork.
Art and poetry are judged as two separate contests. Two grand prize winners will be selected – one overall art winner and one overall poetry winner. Their prizes include a $100 gift card, their winning entry featured prominently in the 2021 Localicious Hawaiʻi calendar and an exclusive class party featuring one of Hawaiʻi’s top chefs. The first and second place winners in each of the three categories – Grades K-2, Grades 3-5 and Grades 6-8 – will receive a $75 (first place) or $50 (second place) gift card.
This year’s 2019 overall art winner Carly Miyamoto (Grade 8, Highlands Intermediate) was joined by chef Alan Wong at her class party. He brought chicken katsu bentos for the class, inspired by her winning entry “Chicken Katsu & Homegrown Grilled Veggies.” Overall poetry winner Jacob Wada (Grade 3, Wilson Elementary) enjoyed a class party with chef Roy Yamaguchi.
“The Localicious Hawaiʻi Art and Poetry Contest is a fun, interactive opportunity for students to express themselves creatively while also prompting them to think a little deeper about where our food comes from,” says Denise Yamaguchi, executive director of HAF. “Our hope for this contest is that it raises awareness of the vital role that local farming and agriculture plays in our community, and to encourage Hawaiʻi to support our local farmers.”
Launched in 2014, the contest continues to encourage students to learn about local food systems. The Localicious Art & Poetry Contest is an extension of HAF’s Localicious Hawaiʻi program, an annual campaign in March promoting restaurants that source locally grown, caught or raised products and raises funds for HAF’s K-12 ag education programs with a signature Localicious dish.
