Hawai‘i Agricultural Foundation’s Localicious Art & Poetry Contest inspired students to share their favorite local foods
Honolulu, HI – The winning submissions of the 2019 Localicious Art & Poetry Contest are on display from Monday, August 26 through Friday, September 20 at Honolulu Hale. Students in grades K-8 were invited to submit their art or poem about their “Favorite Dish Made with a Locally Grown, Caught or Raised Product.” The Localicious Art & Poetry Contest is an extension of HAF’s Localicious Hawaiʻi program, an annual campaign in March promoting restaurants that source locally grown, caught or raised products and raises funds for HAF’s K-12 ag education programs with a Localicious dish.
Art and poetry submissions were judged as two separate contests with over 180 student entries submitted this year. The overall art winner and overall poetry winner each received a $100 gift card, their entry prominently featured in the Localicious Hawaiʻi 2020 calendar, and an exclusive class party featuring one of Hawaiʻi’s top chefs. The overall winners – Carly Miyamoto (Art, Grade 8) and Jacob Wada (Poetry, Grade 3) – enjoyed special class celebrations. Chef Alan Wong visited Carly and her class at Highlands Intermediate and brought chicken katsu bentos inspired by her winning entry “Chicken Katsu & Homegrown Grilled Veggies.” Jacob from Wilson Elementary enjoyed an exclusive class party celebration with Chef Roy Yamaguchi.
First and second place winners were chosen from three categories: Grades K-2, Grades 3-5 and Grades 6-8. First place winners were awarded a $75 gift card and second place winners received a $50 gift card. Their entries displayed at Honolulu Hale include:
- Chicken Long Rice from My Yard by Grace-Ann Kaai, Grade 1, Kanoelani Elementary School
